Constructing Personal Space in Public Realms: A Study of Foreign Domestic Helpers’ Sunday Gathering in Hong Kong

Every Sunday at Hong Kong’s Central district, thousands of Foreign Domestic Helpers group together, creating a temporary “city in a city”. I seek to discuss the case of Foreign Domestic Helpers’ Sunday Gathering in Hong Kong, with a focus on how they construct personal spaces in public realms as the unprivileged group. Through ethnographic the study, I learned the significant meaning for not only Foreign Domestic Helpers but also the masses in the city to strive for personal place through effective everyday practice.

Concept Development

This is an exercise, where I find the way revealing in/out, external/internal- this kind of contradiction interesting

Hong Kong's traffic lights and thier sound remind me of Hong Kong and urban life in many ways.

Statement

Metropolis life tends to have a repetitive pattern, while everyone is also creating his or her own alternative routine in the large picture.  As capitalism is expanding more and more in urban space, everyday life appears to be well-ordered, decorous and dogmatic. However, individuals still manage to find space and time to create some variations to urban's rhythm. The variations are inserted in repeated rhythm, and at the end, it creates another pattern for the powerful urban rhythm by capitalism. I named this piece Variations, Op. X, No.X,   to present the tension of living in urban space.
